Physik Instrumente (PI) develops products for markets that demand the highest levels of precision and reliability – from the semiconductor industry and aerospace to medical technology and research fields such as life sciences. As part of its digital evolution, Ergosign fundamentally redesigned the company’s existing in-house software PIMikroMove and developed a modern, platform-independent web application.

NextGen PIMikroMove: Complex precision, easy to control
BriefA software solution at the limits of its time
PI relies on highly precise motion and positioning systems. Traditionally, the desktop software PIMikroMove was used – a tool that enables users to control, parameterize, tune, and coordinate various components.
However, with an increasing product portfolio, new requirements, and technological advances, the software increasingly reached its limits – both technically and in terms of usability. Against this background, PI decided on a complete redevelopment. The goal was a modern, platform-independent web application that is flexible and easy to use for internal teams as well as external customers. The new solution was not only intended to control PI’s own hardware, but also to integrate products from other manufacturers. A key focus was on reducing training effort and making support more efficient.
The challenge went far beyond technical modernization. The redevelopment required adapting proven control patterns and transferring them into a flexible, modular system.
ApproachA future-proof application for flexibility and productivity
Together with PI, Ergosign developed the new software platform PIMikroMove NextGen, based on modern web technologies and a human-centered design approach that simplifies complex processes while meeting technical requirements.
A central component was the collection of domain-specific and user-oriented requirements – including stakeholder interviews and the definition of user roles. On this basis, a proprietary design system was created with consistent UI components, icons, and interaction patterns. This enables a modular, flexible, and extensible system architecture that supports different user types. From a technological perspective, PIMikroMove NextGen represents a complete restart: the browser-based platform is platform-independent, supports various usage contexts, structured interaction patterns, and agile extensions with Angular for a high-performance web application.
PIMikroMove NextGen demonstrates how our services in Research, UX Design, and Development come together to create a user-centered, structured, and flexible solution.
Continuous further development of the platform is firmly planned, with the goal of regularly transforming grown structures into a consistent, future-proof digital standard.

Complexity isn’t a problem — if it’s structured the right way. With PIMikroMove NextGen, we demonstrated how legacy desktop structures can evolve into a future-proof platform. These are exactly the kinds of transformation projects that are our sweet spot: technically demanding, strategically relevant, and always designed with the people in mind who work with them every day.
