A Web App to Assess and Improve Sustainability

MeinHofKompass (=MyFarmCompass) is an innovative web application that empowers organic farmers to independently assess and improve the sustainability of their farms. Under the leadership of FiBL (Research Institute of Organic Agriculture), the tool was developed in close exchange with Bio Suisse and practical partners, combining scientific rigor and expertise with an intuitive user experience. The goal was to make complex correlations understandable and to provide approximately 250 pilot farms with access to concrete, practical recommendations for action since autumn 2025.

Research Meets User Experience

The Challenge

FiBL approached us with a clear vision and a low-fidelity concept. The challenge was to transform this framework into a high-performance, user-centered web application that offers a low entry barrier for farmers.

The technical challenge was demanding: we had to develop a scalable solution that could be launched right on time for the start of the research project in autumn 2025. At the same time, a significant hurdle laid in data aggregation: to drastically minimize manual effort for users, we implemented a targeted data import for Agis master data and results from the Bio Suisse biodiversity check.

Conceptual Refinement and Technological Excellence

Our Approach

We took the existing low-fidelity prototype and subjected it to a conceptual review from a UX expert's perspective. Working in close, collaborative coordination with the client, we optimized user flows and interaction patterns to radically simplify usability for the target audience. The corporate design provided by FiBL was seamlessly transformed by us into the digital world. We developed a modular UI system that preserves the brand identity while simultaneously meeting the functional requirements of a complex web app.

To meet the ambitious timeline (Beta release for 250 test farms starting in autumn 2025), we relied on agile development with a state-of-the-art tech stack:

  • Frontend: Nuxt (Vue.js) for maximum performance and responsiveness.

  • Backend, Data & Content: Supabase (BaaS) for secure data storage and managing the Agate interface logic.

A Tool for Sustainable Change

Our Result

MeinHofKompass transforms abstract sustainability goals into a concrete, flexible decision-making tool for farm management. The platform adapts to the farmers' available time: from a 30-minute quick check to a comprehensive analysis, users decide for themselves how deeply to log data in order to immediately see where their farm stands. Based on the evaluated indicators, the system recommends intelligently curated informational material specifically designed to help implement improvements.

However, the app does more than just analyze; it functions as a vibrant network. It enables professional exchange with peers via chat and web dialogs, and acts as a direct bridge to professional, free advisory services — covering everything from livestock farming to succession planning.

The Research Goal: Understanding Transformation

The project goes far beyond simply providing an app. The research team is investigating how MeinHofKompass concretely supports Swiss organic farmers in their decision-making processes when implementing sustainable practices. The focus is on integration into daily farm operations: How are digital advisory tools used? How does the exchange with specialized advisors change? The insights gained regarding opportunities and hurdles are intended to help further develop agricultural policy structures and create practical tools and solution-oriented approaches for farm management.

This way, MeinHofKompass bridges the goals of politics, society, and research with real-world implementation on farms to sustainably transform the Swiss agricultural sector.

Ergosign implemented meinhofkompass.ch with a clear focus on UX. The app wins over farmers through its intuitive nature, user-friendliness, and clean design — all made possible by the team’s open communication and proactive approach.

About the Client

Based in Frick, Switzerland, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) is one of the world’s leading institutions for research and consultancy in the field of organic farming. Its primary strength lies in the direct transfer of knowledge from scientific research to practical application.

Through the "MeinHofKompass" project, the institute investigates how digital tools can make the sustainability performance of farms measurable and improvable. This specific research initiative is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and implemented in partnership with Bio Suisse, all under the scientifically independent leadership of FiBL.
