Following the apparent fashion to have an online lab, the probably most polarizing software suite ever got a dedicated lab too: Microsoft Office Labs. Like Adobe’s and Google’s labs it is a place to test new concepts and get feedback (for free) by willing users.
The motivation to keep this site on a designer’s radar is twofold:
On the one hand it is interesting to know what the future might look like for that particular tool that is (still) extensively shaping the standard UI skills and expectations of many many users.
On the other hand the comments by the testers are a good read to see how well the prototypes are received, what current concerns are raised and why.
Especially noteworthy is that one of the initial concepts is basically a search plugin e.g. for commands which embraces the paradigm shift from browse to search we blogged about before (Searching for the future of searching ,Search killed the address bar).
